OUR PHILOSOPHY

We love Wisconsin*. We love that giant fiberglass statue of a musky up in Hayward. We love the big ‘M’ in Platteville. We love Taliesin East and the Milwaukee Art Museum. We love the Geneva Lake Shore Path, and we love the Ice Age Trail. We love a little bar on Water Street that was once called “a dive” by The New York Times.

Wisconsin is where we provide our industry and pay our mortgages. It’s where our standards for time and distance were established, and where we learned to tough out the winter. It’s where our temperaments were fashioned and our values were forged, and it’s where our vote matters.

Because we love Wisconsin, we believe it’s our job to cultivate its bounty, preserve its beauty, and enrich its culture. We source our grains from local fields and our botanicals from local gardens. We’re headquartered in the capital city. You can buy our spirits from Siren down to Darlington and up to Sister Bay.

At State Line, we bottle the best of Wisconsin. Pour our spirits out, raise them up, and commemorate a life well-lived in a beautiful green country.

*We humbly recognize that our distillery is built on Ho-Chunk land, and that Wisconsin is the native home of Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Ho-Chunk Nation, Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Menominee Tribe of Wisconsin, Oneida Nation, Forest County Potawatomi, Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, St. Croix Chippewa, Sokaogon Chippewa (Mole Lake), and Stockbridge-Munsee peoples.

JOHN MLEZIVA
Founder & Distiller

State Line Distillery was founded by a man named John Mleziva. Muh-LEZ-i-vah. We can blame his Czech heritage for that preposterous last name. John attended UW-Eau Claire and Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. He’s worked as an emergency medical technician, a salmon fishing guide, and a speaker salesman. He’s left-handed. He’s pretty hairy. For the past eight years, he’s sung baritone with the Madison Choral Project. He once went skydiving in the Swiss Alps. In high school, he had frosted tips. He’s an excellent swimmer. His daughters’ names are Chloe and Elsie. His childhood home was haunted, sort of. He once survived a dreadful fall down a flight of wooden stairs because he was wearing a humongous sombrero. At age 17, he organized a pay-to-play squirt gun game called Assassination for several hundred of his classmates that consumed their daily lives for almost a month. Each year, he rides his bike from Duluth to the Twin Cities to raise money for MS research. It rained on his wedding day. He and his dad watch Packer games in tense, focused silence. He’s a speedy walker, a clumsy bowler, a snore-y sleeper, and a gifted booze maker. Oh, and his favorite Enya album is “Watermark.” Easily.

Mark Anunson, head distiller at State Line Distillery

MARK ANUNSON
Head Distiller & Production Manager

Mark moved from small farm to big city to even bigger city, pushing pixels around from an office desk and dreaming of fermentation. He reconnected with John after a few years of production work at an Illinois distillery, and became an indispensable member of the team. When he’s not at State Line, he’s biking, reading sci-fi, pretending to know Linux, or pursuing hobbies he has no time for.

MIKE MCDONALD
Bar Manager & Mixologist

Mike’s no ordinary bartender. At Bittercube, he created cocktails, crafted bitters, worked in R&D, and presided over the Milwaukee chapter of the U.S. Bartenders’ Guild. Mike’s been with State Line since day one, but since then he also founded a craft ice and bar consulting company called Wisco Ice Co. We use (and sell) his crystal clear ice in our cocktail lounge, and rely on his expertise as we develop new products.

SHELBY MCKEEN
Events Coordinator

Shelby McKeen is a social butterfly with a knack for planning. While her background may be in business analytics, event coordinating is her calling! Living in big cities up and down the east coast her whole life, Madison has been a nice change of pace. Shelby enjoys reading, doggos, making new friends, and giving back to the community. You can find Shelby at State Line being a busy bee during events or hanging out with her favorite cocktail on most trivia nights!

Danielle Leoni, distiller at State Line Distillery

DANIELLE LEONI
Distiller

Danielle was recognized as a Level 1 Sommelier after several months of training. That’s not an easy get. Her experience translates beautifully to the distillation process, and her intricate knowledge of flavor and texture helps inform the quality of State Line spirits. Danielle worked in hospitality before joining our crew here in Madison, and she’s an invaluable member of the team.

Elista Fisher, distiller at State Line Distillery

ELISTA FISHER
Distiller

Elista is a former ecologist who studied water biology. A vagabond at heart, she decided to stop studying microscopic animals and start studying microscopic yeast at a brewery. She fell in love with the industry and moved to Madison to pursue distilling. As many others do, Elista quickly fell in love with the community and product that defines State Line. In her free time, you can find her hiking, walking her dog, or making spontaneous travel plans that she probably can't afford at that moment!

Rebekah Krajnik, assistant distiller at State Line Distillery

REBEKAH KRAJNIK
Assistant Distiller

Rebekah is a former math and science teacher. She has a love for all things Scotland and spirits so naturally she found herself a home within State Line. With her extensive background in Scottish Highland and Country dance and her role as president for the St. Andrews Society, Rebekah brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and fun to the distillery! Rebekah enjoys home brewing, crafting unique cocktails, spending time with her three kids, and baking. She makes a mean sourdough loaf and has the best random tid bits of information to share!

DEL LORENSON
Field Sales Representative

Del Lorenson never made it as a wise man and couldn’t cut it as a poor man stealing, so after spending the last decade plus in Madison pouring drinks at a few of the city’s iconic taverns and manning the counter at a friendly neighborhood liquor store, he decided to join State Line Distillery because it reminds him of who he really is. A Wisconsin native, criss crossing the beloved state selling a quintessentially Wisconsin product is a little too ironic, dont ya think? If he had a million dollars, he’d tour the country with his dog Lando, camping, hiking, and driving a nice, reliant automobile the whole way while singing along to alternative rock hits from Canadian bands circa 1995-2002.
